I stand by the Redington Crosswater series. You get the complete set of a rod, reel and line for around 125. I purchased one over 6 years ago and still used it as a back up to my Hydros. My dad bought one 3 years ago and still uses the entire set as his goto rod. The reel actually holds up really well. I have used the st. croix entry level and was not as impressed . My friend had one of the mid ranged rods and the reel base fell apart within a year. he ended up selling it shortly after. The crosswater is available at BPS and Fish Hawk I believe. My brother says the TFO's are nice rods too.

It was the high end model; the Legend Elite.

I was on BPS website this morning, they had TFO Casting for Recovery rods in 8-6 5 wt. 4 piece & 9' 8 wts. for $88, with $25 going to the Casting for Recovery foundation. Hard to beat if the rod fits your need.

I have the St Croix Rio Santo and the Imperial and they both perform well. Whatever rod you decide on, Cast it before you buy it. They sell an inexpensive Cortland at Walmart that will catch fish if you take the time to learn its characteristics and present the fly properly.

For $100 and the warranty, the Redington Pursuit is very hard to beat.
