Default Great help from Fish Hawk

I made my rare trip down to ATL to go to the Fish Hawk and find a 9ft 5wt for the hootch. Had been in a few months ago to pick up fly tying materials to start a hootch specific fly box. I suppose I could pick up materials anywhere but I could not have a local expert that knows the water exactly where I will be fishing hand pick me out materials, as well as example flies and spend and hour with me explaining stuff. Even drew me a diagram for a few. I came back for a rod and spent more time trying different ones out and getting a little casting instruction. Brought the flies I tied with me to show off and got further tips. Overall I love going to the Fish Hawk - the staff is great and they have everything. Figured they needed a publix thanks on the forum.

I've been going there since 1987 and have never had anything but a great experience in their shop
"Fly Fishing Is Not A Team Sport"----Tom McGuane

The fisherman now is one who defies society, who rips lips, who drains the pool, who takes no prisoners, who is not to be confused with the sissy with the creel and bamboo rod. Granted, he releases what he catches, but in some cases, he strips the quarry of its perilous soul before tossing it back in the water. What was once a trout – cold, hard, spotted and beautiful – becomes “number seven.”

I have been going since 1978! Got my 1st fly rod there and still have it. Like me their getting old.. Last week I told Gary he didn`t have any Frenchie flys in the bin. He looked at me with a puzzled looked and said" What`s a Frenchie fly" ?. Oh boy, he`s been out in the Salt too many times fly fishing for tarpon!
Bob, Stache and the rest of the crew are on top of things however!

Yerf, looks like we're the same vintage. I moved to Atlanta in the summer of 1977 and found the shop on Buckhead Avenue the first week. I told Gary a month ago that his NGTO ad banner was over ten years out of date - said something like "Atlanta's fly fishing shop for over 30 years". Looks like he's changed it.

I was just in there this morning to get my rod tip repaired. Very helpful and friendly guys, and a great shop with top quality gear! First time I've talked to them about fly fishing though. Up until recently, I've been almost exclusively a bass fisherman. Funny how our addictions change faces but ultimately stay the same...
