Post Be Safe Out There

A kayaker lost her life on the Nantahala two days ago. She was very experienced, had been boating the Nantahala for years, and was a former championship kayaker. She was in her early 50s and well known on the River. There will be a memorial for her at the Nantahala Outdoor Center. They do not know what happened other than they found her body, and later found her kayak lodged against a bank.

Many of us have comparable experience in rivers, but we really need to take a minute to observe the water before we start and take any needed precautions. This is the time of year for great fishing, but also for very cold water and higher water.

Be smart, be safe. --John Kies--

Tragic. I read on a whitewater site that it happened on the Choah though.
