Default latest build - Pac Bay Raniforest 9wt

First and last attempt at stabilizing splated maple - stabilizing agent - plexiglass disolved in acetone and then forced into the spalted maple under pressure - maple turned rock hard with 100% penitration, used an old pressure cooker and air compressor - many mistakes before finding the right pressure and acetone to plexiglass mixture, reel seat finish - Super Glue, birchbark coated with cork seal.

Pac Bay Rainforest Series II 9wt. Silk wraps with 3 coats of color preserve, maroon trim wraps

It may have been a booger to do, but the whole handle section looks fabulous!

Mike,
Beautiful job, as usual.
Question? Do you think that using Minwax Wood Hardener would strengthen the softer and/or unstabilized woods enough to hold up on a reel seat? I have some Bocote that I would like to make into reel seats/butt caps and end pieces. Also I'm going to try and locate some Wild Cherry burl when I'm in Penna. next week.
Chuck

I'm not familiar with "stabilized". I take it as meaning that the wood is soft, but due to the visually aesthetic appeal of the grain it must be hardened to use for a reel seat, etc.

Gator - splated maple is basically rotting wood, it is very soft, a plastic resin must be forced into the wood to make it hard and strong enough to use, other woods that require stabilization are buckeye burl, redwood burl, box elder.

Chuck - I have use MinWax Wood hardender with success - the reel seet is already turned to 1 1/4 time it's desired shape, placed in a jar and coverd with the hardender and let it cook for several days.

PS- All work was done on a drill press using wood rasps, files, and sandpaper

Thanks for explaining that. I meant to ask you that the other day. I thought you mentioned about using antler when you showed me the work in progress, but maybe I was wrong.

BTW, I may have worked out the issue with the missing snake guide. I'll let you know if it works out.
