Default Grayton Beach report

I've been down here for a week with a friend and our kayaks in hopes of catching some kings and spanish, both of which would be firsts for me. It was the tarpon 160's maiden voyage in the gulf and it handled great.

Thursday and Friday were spent trolling cigar minnows a little past the second bar to no avail. Ended up coming closer to shore on those days to catch some ladyfish and blue runner just to not get skunked. It seemed like the ladys were a lot bigger than in previous years and were a blast on light tackle! I picked up a spanish right off the second bar on a gotcha which put up a fun fight.

This morning (saturday) we finally started to figure things out. After advice from these other kayak fisherman out there we got to know, we trolled out to about two miles from shore. My buddy caught a nice 5 pound spanish on the troll out and had two other runs that never hooked up. I caught a small dolphin on the way out as well. Here's the pics:

After awhile trolling across I was hooked up with something fast. After a nice fight I pulled up my first king! This absolutely made my trip.

While we were out there we saw one of the biggest sea turtles I've seen and a blacktip the size of my friend's hobie quest swam right under him! I gotta say, I'm hooked on kayak fishing now.

Great report and congrats on the trip! I haven't fished Grayton since I was a kid. A friend and I fish have fished around PC but we have never taken our kayaks. I may have to get reacquainted with Grayton next year.

Thanks! Yeah it's such a good area to fish with not so many people fishing it. I hardly ever see people fishing the surf off the watercolor beach.

One thing I learned, when buying bait, buy how much you think you'll need and then double that. We probably ran out of a dozen cigar minnows in an hour.
