Default 2017 Spring Fling Iron Skillet

It's time for Spring Fling and that means it's a chance for you to win the coveted Iron Skillet award for bringing the tastiest side dish!

NGTO will supply the main event (hot dogs) but we still need as many side dishes as we can rustle up. In years past we've had 50-100 people show, now you don't need to feed them all (unless you really want to) but a little extra is greatly appreciated.

Always needed are deserts and it's perfectly OK if we have three different batches of Chocolate Chip Cookies or four different sets of brownies or seven kinds of gooey cake. Baked beans, green bean salad, three-bean salad - if it's got beans in it that's great!

A big batch of grandma's secret slaw? Wonderful!

Tater salad? Heck yeah!

Corn casserole? Bring it!

The only limit is your imagination. And as before we'll have paper buckets in front of each dish on the buffet tables. Spring Fling attendees will receive a ticket to vote for their favorite homemade side dish. The cook with the most tickets wins the NGTO Iron Skillet! No, really, it's an Iron Skillet. You also win culinary bragging rights for another year. Or until the Fall Fling, whichever comes first.

So please start thinking about those side dishes and we'll look forward to seeing them - and eating them - at the Spring Fling on April 1st!

If you bring a side dish, please let us know and we will handle it from there. After the fling you may pick up your cookware from the serving tables.

Voting will take place during meal time when each attendee will have received a ticket to place in a bucket placed by each side dish. Good luck to all the wonderful chefs who help feed the fishing masses!

PLEASE Sign up below.

Maybe Roosevelt beans and chili!
Of course, you can only win one Iron Skillet per side/dessert per fling.

Oh I'll for sure bring some chili! No Brunswick stew until November.

How early do you need to bring a dish? I am thinking of how to keep a Dutch oven warm so the food does not get cold.

Wrap the dutcher in a beach blanket and place it in a cooler. You'll be surprised how much heat this retains.

What he said. I live 1-1/2 hours away from the hatchery, and usually get there 10AM or so. I cook my beans before I leave home, wrap them in old towelsand pack in a cooler. They will stay HOT for hours. Cast holds heat extremely well, and a cooler will keep'em hot. I have a separate cooler just for this.

P.S. Use an old towel or three. Don't use the wife's good bath towels. The smells will linger, even after washing. Don't ask me how I know this.....

I know several on NGTO cook in cast iron....we need to have a cast iron throw down. If you got it, bring it! Beans, chili, Apple cobbler, home made bread, its all good!

I'll also bring a portable cooktop. It has two coils so we could warm up a couple of dutchers as need be, and in shifts if we have that many. (I won't need it because I'll be using a Nesco cooker.)
