Smile NC short backpacking trip

I drove up to western NC this weekend, about 3.5 hours from Atlanta, to fish and camp a new to me small river. It was gorgeous and looked fishy as hell: cold water, lots of deep plunge pools leading into long 2-4' deep runs. It was also crystal clear; there was almost nowhere I couldn't see the bottom. The clarity made for hard fishing (at least, that's my excuse), and I only caught three fish in a day and a half of fishing. One of them was a fat ~15" brown, though, on a double-bead stone. Probably not coincidentally, it was in a pool with a big boulder I could sneak up behind and flip my line over. That was a nervous fight on my tiny tenkara rod (Tenkara USA Cascade) and 6x tippet. It's probably my PB on that rod and on the east coast, definitely the biggest brown.
The other fish were a ~11" brown on a tan elk hair caddis and a rainbow about the same size on a BWO. The rainbow was during a short but legit mayfly hatch...I don't know the species, but the BWO was close enough.
Seven hours driving and ~12 miles hiking for three fish, but the big brown made it all worthwhile.

Ta-Da ........ You have broken the code and now understand why all of us do what we do. Yes it is well worth the effort to reach those special places where the wild fish live.

A 15 incher is a trophy on most mountain streams.
