Default Leave me in the river

Leave me in the river

No Viking funeral pyre for me…
No flames no smoke no scattered ash.
Quench this thirst with tail waters free.
Just take me down where the water’s clear
And leave me in the river, dear.

Lay my body where waters clear as morning dew
slide past mud slicked snags and chuckle between rounded stones.
Rest my head on pebbled runs with waters flashing in the sun and
my toes will rest in cool deep pools green as emeralds.
There salmo trutta lurks behind my vacant ribcage,
seeking prey where once beat my heart.
Sirens will sing among my freestone bones
as they scatter down my riverbed.
Just take me down where my soul can roam
And leave me in the river, dear.

No hole in the ground for me…
No dirt, no grave, no moldering rot.
My deathbed longs to be free of me and
My spirit harbors a powerful thirst.
Just take me down where it’s cool and wet
And leave me in the river, dear.

Reminds me of my great-grandfather Norman, the only person to take me fishing when I was a kid....he was found on the side of a North Carolina trout stream, half in the water, rod in hand, with a smile on his face. Beautiful way to go.

RIP Norman
