Looks like I'll be in northeast Alabammer for the weekend and was thinkin' bout heading over to the "Big H" for a little cold weather fishing. Anybody fished there recently? If so, what should I expect and what type of patterns should I bring? I've never fished there at this time of the year, so I guess I'll go with the usual suspect (weighted nymphs, buggers, etc..)
Also, there used to be a really good web site that had stream reports for the Hiwasse, if anybody has that link, I'd be grateful. wolf |

Drifter,
I thinking about Saturday (Jan 18), during the last "spring fling", Tick (I think that was his name), told me about a real nice location that I hadn't fished before. I really had a productive day at this particular location and didn't see another person the whole afternoon. I hope I can remember where it was. Anyway, I'd really like to get with you, if your interested. wolf |

I have a friend at work who swears that white or peach egg patterns and also white crystal buggers are the flies to have on the river. I have never fished there but I trust him since he is a local

Hey Lone Wolf,
I've been on the HI every weekend for about the past month. Fishing has been great at times and slow at other times. I think a lot of it has to do with the weather we've been getting. It's been hot on the warmer days and not so hot on the cold cold days. Daily hatches of midges are focused on by the trout. So if your wanting to fish dry go with something #20 or up. Try hanging a small midge dropper off of it. Soft hackles have also been producing pretty well, just toss them down and across and let them swing. Give the soft hackle slow 1" strips as you retrieve it. Woolley Boogers have also been working all right. They've been running both turbines constantly for about the past 3 months it seems. Don't despare because theres still wadable water to be found. Just park at the Powerhouse cul-de-sac and walk across the swinging bridge. The weed beds at the powerhouse are very wadable with caution, as is most of the trackside of the river from the powerhouse down to Colonels island. Good judgement and caution should be used while wading just like anywhere else. I'll be on the HI both days next weekend barring Norris shutting the water off. So keep an eye for me and maybe I can show you around some. RacerX and I are going to try to line something up for next weekend so I know I'll be there for sure one day. Drifter, If you come bring your boat! The section of river from the powerhouse down to Towee Creek has been pretty hot, especially if your in a boat. This section is pretty easy with hardly any rocks to bang on! Rocky http://www.geocities.com/tnrockyracc..._outdoors.html |

Thanx for the tips guys. I'm gonna try and come up Sunday and Monday(King Holiday). Looks like I need to tie up some soft hackles and midge pupae.
I know ya'll don't agree, but I love two-turbine flow Some big fish can be caught when the water is up....course ya'll know that.Jerry Crane....you out there? You need to dust off that driftboat and go with us. Thanks all, Drifter |

I'll be visiting relatives in Madison, AL (near Huntsville). The weather is beginning to look like we could be in for a snow storm this weekend, so I don't know how that will alter my plans.

I have fished the hiawassee around this time of year before. You should fish 2 bead headed nymphs as a dropper. I have had very good luck with a bhp nymph. While your there go to the upper high fly. They should be able to help you out.
