Cool

Boy, you guys talking about H-I bamboo fly rods just brought me memories. Horrocks-Ibbotson I believe was the name of that company. I recalled that first bamboo fly rod when I saw the name. It was 9' with two tips(both warped as I recall no matter what I did to prevent it.) But-thanks for the memories!

TB,

You can often find H-I fly reels on Ebay for about $15. Also an occasional H-I rod can be had cheeep. Check in the Fishing: Collectibles Section

They make for a nice display in the den.

Question

I'm looking for information on a bamboo bait casting rod that recently came into my posession. That's right, 'Bait Casting Rod'. I didn't even know they made bait cast bamboo rods. This one comes from Wyoming and was probably purchased prior to 1950. It is 55 inches, two piece and has a cork handle. The reel seat is interesting in that it slides over the reel and is held in place with finger pressure on the "trigger" on the bottom of the rod. There is no screw type mechanism at all. The label is scruffed in places, but across the top of the oval label it reads "M_NTAGUE', and the lower half reads "_UNBE_M".

If anyone has any information about the manufacturer or the history of bamboo bait casters, I would appreciate it. Thanks for your help.

John,

It's probably a Montague Sunbeam manufactured in the fifties in Montague City, Mass. I've got a Montague flyrod and a spinning rod. The rod tube label on the fly outfit reads, "Montague Rod and Reel Company" .."World's Largest Maker of Split Bamboo Rods" "Montague City, Mass. U.S.A."

The bamboo spinning rods can be had for about $50 on Ebay depending on condition. They are beautiful to look at and fun to restore.
