Jack Kerouac's "Dharma Bums" and "On the Road."
Jim Harrison's "Good Day to Die" kicks *** . So does most Tom McGuane. Jimmy Buffet's "Pirate looks at 50" and "Tales from Margraritaville." just a few i have read in the recent past that are really cool. ------------------ Screaming reels, Jeremy "Never go camping with a man that drinks whiskey sours." Definitely check out "The Old Man and the Boy" by Robert Ruark. And "The Education of Little Tree" by Forrest Carter is another. Both are really good reads.

'Undaunted Courage' (Lewis & Clark).
'The Oregon Trail' (not about the Oregon trail by the way - more about southeastern Wyoming in the 1830s and very descriptive). 'At Our Own Risk' Dr. Thomas Sutherland (Sutherland was a hostage in Lebannon and this book gives valuable insight into the middle east) 'What If' Robert Cowley (History's what ifs - scholarly but quite good) 'Brules' I can't recall the author's first name, last name is Gates as in the aircraft company. (a mountain man of the late 19th century). Any book by Louis L'Amour 'The Virginian' by Wister (find an original, not some current edition - again a good description of the real west). 'The Travels of William Bartram' (various editions and contributing authors) 'Huckleberry Finn' Samuel Clemmons (Everyone needs to read Huck Finn from the perspective of an adult) These are all good campfire readers, some are just fun, some informative. The common thread is that all are well written and informative - not just brain candy. ---JCK--- ------------------ |

I second "Undaunted Courage". Don't let the first 80-100 pages fool you. It's just the set up to a great book.
- "Gods and Generals" prequal to his father's "Killer Angels" (Gettysburg). Both are great. - "Cold Mountain" - "Bible" It's a good urn! JWH ------------------ Happiness is: Grace, Family, and Fishin |

Pato, Check out Gordon MacQuarie's Stories of the Old Duck Hunters, More Stories of the Old Duck Hunters and Last Stories of the Old Duck Hunters. They are awesome books that revolve around duck hunting and fly fishing. They are the cornerstone of my library. ------------------ Card carrying Native Texan! |

Books? By the time I get home at night my eyes are about shot from reading posts on the Net all day!
Mmmm.... this explains my growing pile of books that have never been cracked and the recent addition to the honey-do list to clean out my office/guest bedroom. ------------------ Taste for the good life, I can live it no other way . . . |

i second flyslinger's reccomendation of kerouac's "The Dharma Bums." this is probably one of my favorite books. also, anything by bill bryson ("in a sunburned country," "a walk in the woods"...). i also enjoy james prosek's books. geirach is very good, also. i've also started reading a garrison keillor book (he's the one that does "prairie home companion" on npr) that i really like. you also can't forget emerson, thoureau, washington irving, and whitman. they're not exactly new books, but they're really good.

Killer Angels may just be the best historical fiction ever written.
Also, Gates of Fire, about the Spartans at Thermoplyae (sp?). I had fallen behind in my reading, so I am catching up on my Clancy habit, and just now finishing Rainbow Six. Awesome. [This message has been edited by BLACK KNIGHT (edited 03-07-2002).] |

Joseph Plum Martin - Sufferings of a Revolutionary Soldier. You'll never look at the flag the same again, even after " The Patriot". This book tells you what that movie left out. How often the Continental Army was without food, without shelter, and without arms. If your a stickler for grammer n' all, it'll drive ya nutty, but otherwise, it's about the best $6.95 I've ever spent.
Owl God bless our military......as the fighting rages on.... |
