Will the water under the dam be clearer after a rain than in other areas of the river? What flies work best this time of year? Also, what is the number to call to find out about water releases?

davemck-
The answer is yes. The water at the dam stays clear pretty much all the time. Others can give you a better answer about flies to use there - I've only fished at the dam once - but I know Gray Ghost ran into a big caddis hatch there a few days ago, and the area is known for good midge hatches. -Milton |

If you hit the magic window when the caddis is coming off its great. Some of us have been working it hard also with any caddis emerger pattern having good numbers. I have also had good days using a little blk stonefly pattern. A prince has been working great for me on overcast days. The dam has a good population of crayfish so you might wont to keep that in mind. A light brown Woolly bugger or Dark orange or red will work as a crayfish on the bottom. Olive Buggers can turn them on sometimes also on an overcast day.

I fished around Bowman's Island Friday. There were alot of small fish rising to small gray midges, but I couldn't get any takers on the surface. A #14 BH Prince produced quite a few wild browns from 6" to 10" though. I didn't have any luck with buggers, hare's ears, pheasant tails, or any of the other usual patterns.
