Well, I will say this....they give car salesmen a new goal to strive for. Needless to say I prob. won't set foot in there again. A 45 min. wait ( while everyone else got helped) and then a pushy, irrating salesman , that wouldn't even listen to what I wanted to say.Hmmpfh. I think I'd be better off buying from JOe Blow down the street. Ok not eally, but I was really pissed off when my " free PC" deal turned out to coast over $500, which is nothing to you rich guys but means alot when you only make $8 an hour.

MicroCenter sucks.
Stick with the internet retailers. www.shopper.com has a good list of products, reviews, and links to retailers. You will almost always find a better deal online. Saved $150 on a digital camera, $30 on a scanner, $40 on wading boots, etc. This is compared to going to a local retailer.

www.woodogie.com also has a "Free PC" offer. I think they make their money by locking you into a $19.95 month internet access for a certain amount of time. NOt bad considering you are going to pay that anyways.

Microcenter is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to customer service, quality of the product (except brand names) -- you name it.

Netboy, Owl, & others--BEWARE--of ANY deal which offers a free (or practically free) computer just for signing up for internet service for 1, 2, or 3 years. My brother (lives in Cleveland) said he knew someone who did that, and NONE of their internet calls were placed thru a local number. These people got a telephone bill that was up in the HUNDREDS of dollars!!! THAT'S how they're making their money!

The call wold have been local ( but thanks for the warning) but they were " out" of the cheapo PC and the next grade up + a monitor put me into " not free at all" status !

Here's the best deal I've found( though my memory fails me as to exact #'s)

ProTeva PC
Petium III
450 MHz
64 MB RAM
8GB of whatever it is you call it
speakers (stereo)
40xCD rom
yadda yadda yadda
and it includes ( INCLUDES ) a 14" monitor ( small I know) and shipping.

the price ??? $ 999.00

that's the PC a monitor and shipping for a cool thou. bucks !

see it at ValueAmerica.com
and let me know if it's too good to be true. sorry I don't have a link to the exac page...I emailed some of you hoping for a " second" but i got a response from JByrd...and everyone knows he's dumb as a brick ! hehehehe- JK - Bird friend !!!!!

Owl,

Seems I'm always asking you questions. Why do you need a Pentium 450 CPU unless your going to play games on it? I believe everybody knows what your going to do with it . To save some cash, has anybody recommended a slower Pentium or even an AMD or Celeron processor. I'd recommend less processing power and a larger monitor. 17" monitors aren't that much more expensive but are much more pleasant for my ever aging eyes. You'll have to weigh cost vs. fear of obsolescence. Ask some more questions about what your needs will be. IMHO

Finally ! Someone that can get into a " joust " on another thread and not take it personally...I forget the debates pretty easily. I'd like to lear some code ( if possible - I ain't real smart, Capt Dan ) and have a site ...scan some photos to send to or belove ( did I say that ? ) leader here,...and yes play some games....but I have a neat little thing called a 'Sony Playstation" for that , so games would just be a bonus. PS...EG - it was veeeey late last night when I went on the ranting spree and I had already been " warmed up on another thread. My apoligies. Noontoola is wild fish , though. ( had to say it )

So should I go with MicroCenter , or what ?

Owl,

You can definately beat Micro-Center's prices elsewhere. First off, does the above 'puter include any software? Check out www.pricewatch.com . Go to "pc" then to "Complete Pentium III xxxMhx". This site compares all the internet retailer prices on complete systems, peripherals, monitors, memory, storage, etc. and spits out the lowest prices. But beware: the best deals are not name brand and service can be shady.

Listen to the EG- he's right. There is almost no software out there that requires a PIII processor. AMD's and Celerons are just as fast and as reliable. Heck, you can get a DELL 400mhz celeron system (includes modem, software, 15" monitor, all the essentials) for $880 from their website. Dell is number 1 in reliability and service.

Email me if you want more of my personal advice.

Thanks everyone. I forgot to mention that I'd also like to learn how to spall....er...spell. So I don't need a 400 + MHz to run games ???? Hmmm...that helps out on the $$.
