Bill Couch forwarded this to me...you don't have to be in TU to participate. A good way for us all to walk the walk along with talkin the talk! Trout Now!
SC
To: GA Council - Officers & Chapter Contacts
CC: CCTU Board

GA TU has received a request for assistance from Judd Smith of the GA
DNR. Judd is planning a cleanup along the Delayed Harvest section of
the Amicalola on the morning of Saturday, March 11.
>
The plan is for volunteers to meet Judd at 9:00AM at the Dawson Forest
game check station (on GA 53 about 2-3 miles from Dawsonville).

Please let me know how many volunteers from your chapter are likely to
participate in this project. If you are no longer the contact point for
your chapter, please pass this on and let me know the name and e-mail
address of your replacement.

In case some have not been up there lately, the ice storm a few weeks back really devastated the place. Trees were down all around the cabin and on the cabin. Also on the road in. Also, the trails were all blocked up with downed trees/brush. These trails are used during stocking events as well as usual access to the stream. DNR had been in with a bobcat and pushed a lot of it up around the cabin parking area. So, I don't know if Judd is talking about a trash clean-up or an storm damage clean-up or both. Maybe someone can expound on that.

I'm in. Just want to know if I'll need a chainsaw or garbage bags. Hope to see a lot of you there.

You all beat me to the punch again....

Aaron,
Hello, I am Judd Smith, a Ranger with the DNR and I work the Dawson Co.
area including the Amicalola River. I try to keep an eye on your site and
read the comments posted. It seems that your contributors are very
interested in the delayed harvest section of the Ami. I have scheduled a
river cleanup for March 11 on this section of the river. We plan to meet at
the Dawson Forest check station just above the bridge on Hwy 53 at 9 AM.
From here we will see how many people we have and will try to get both the
lower end and the upper end cleaned up. If you would, please let your
readers know about this. If you need any more info or would just like to
talk to me further about this feel free to call me. The number at our office
is 770-535-5499. If I am not there, they will get a message to me and I'll
get back to you as soon as I can.
Thanks,
Judd

Sorry I was not more specific guys. I had originally planned to just have a litter clean-up because I did not know how many folks I would have show up. This is still the plan but if enough show I was also considering possibly clearing some of the trails along the side of the river so bring some gloves. I will supply the garbage bags and will haul off the trash. I also hope to have a chain saw or two. Also bring your rods. I don't know how long it will take to get our work done, but if there is time you might as well fish while your there.
Thanks for the interest.

Is the clean up still on? Would someone post directions (I'm coming from SC)or send an email? I can come through Clayton, that direction, or I-85..I don't have a clue which way to head. I'll be bringing some of my boys from the school. Thanks.

I'm still planning to do the clean-up. Go through Clayton on 411 south past Tallulah Falls about 6-7 miles until you reach the first red light. Turn right and follow the signs to Clarkesville, about 5 miles. Just follow the signs right through Clarkesville to Cleveland on Hwy 115. Stay on 115 through Cleveland and follow the signs to Dahlonega, about 20 miles. In Dahlonega just follow the signs to Dawsonville, you will end up on Hwy 9 right into Dawsonville. When you reach the square in Dawsonville go you will be on Hwy 53. Just look for the sign to Jasper to make sure. Go out of town on 53 towards Jasper and the Wildlife Check Station for Dawson Forest will be on your right about 3-5 miles. If you cross the river you just passed it. It may sound confusing but all of the towns that you go through are small and there are not many chances to take wrong turns. If you do get lost call the DNR office at 770-535-5499 and tell them you are trying to get to the Dawson Forset Check Station for the River Clean-up. Hope all these directions didn't scare you off.

Lady Jane,

I'm not sure where you are in South Carolina but it may be longer but faster to come down I-85. You know how to get to the hatchery. Just go about 6 miles past there on Hwy 20 to Georgia 400. Take a right and head north for about 15 miles until you come to the Hwy 53 intersection. It's just past the big outlet mall. Turn left and follow Hwy 53 for a little over 12 miles to the river. You will go right through the middle of Dawsonville's town square on the way. The river is about 6.5 miles past Dawsonville. Turn to the right at the dirt road a hundred yards or so before you reach the river. This may be way out of the way but it is all flat, easy driving. You have to decide which is best for you. The Clayton path is probably much more scenic.

I'll be there with the kids.
