Question

well......Ive decided to give tying a try. While price shopping for a vise I noticed some are available without the cam type jaw closing at a CONSIDERABLE savings. Vises like the Renzetti Traveller or the Griffin Odyssey are 50.00 cheaper without it. Is it THAT important? What type of mechanism would they have? TIA for any input.

I just bought the one with the cheep vice. I'm sure that a good vice now would help with these #18 hooks but so far I have managed without it. I say if you have the money go ahead and get one with a real good vice. If you don't (like me) just get a kit for about $50 or $60 and see how you like it.

Tried to send you a e but there is something wrong with your E address???

I like the Cabelas Master Vise IB-31-4847. The 3 differant jaws lets you tie very small flies and it takes a minute to change up to medium or saltwater stuff. At $24.99 it is a very good vise. You'll spend enough on materials! BTW I think you will really enjoy tying your own flies. Good luck.

The cam is new for the Renzetti, so maybe you're seeing old one's discounted to move the product? Mine is not cam operated, and works just fine. I've gone as small as some size 24 Griffith's Gnats and not had a problem. Plus if you want cam later, it's a retrofit mod, so you can change to cam if you decide you want it.

If you want a tool, choose a vise.......if you want a really outstanding tool, choose a Dyna-King.

Cam's are fine......locking cams are brilliant!

One day all vises will have the cam that Dyna-King's have! That is if DK doesn't put em all outta business !

Hey Feenom, My vise is a Masatax rotary. Cheapo vise I got off e-bay, Heck I don't even know if it's true rotary or what the rotary feature would be if it were true. It does serve the purpose of holding the hooks though. I'd say get as good as you can but don't be afraid to try a cheap one to start with (tying materials/tools will run into the wallet pretty quick)! Once you've gotten a few flies under your belt, you can always upgrade to a better vise and only be out $10.00- $25.00 depending on what kind of deal you can sniff out! Can always sell/donate the old vise to the next fella who needs another addiction ! Rocky
P.S. Seen a nice fat 20+" brown that some fella pulled out of the HI last saturday. He caught it on a Tellico Nymph! Get the recipe for them and we'll give them a shoton the HI!

What? No comebacks from anyone?
I do have a Dyna king Squire....about $140. and it is a great vise, but Regals are good, as are Renzteei Travlers, and Danvises'. There are lots of good vises out there, so the best thing to do is go to a good flyshop and try a few. UO has lots of them, and I'm sure they'd let you ( or show you how ) to tie a fly on them so you could try them out.

Thanks guys!....I did play around on a few and really liked the Traveller. I ordered the "non-cam" model. I couldnt resist a bargain! Rocky...those "ugly" tellicos I bought are what got me interested in tying in the first place! Im sure I can do better than that! 20"er huh? Probably the one I missed! .....cool site MJ thanks. Starr... I checked the address on file and its correct. I delete alot of mail if I dont know who its from. I might have gotten carried away! sorry

I have a Renzetti and love it It is a bit pricey (135 or so) but I will not have to buy another vise unless I cahnge my name to AK Best. (which if you see some of my flies you don't have to worry about) There are several good manufacturers out there, including the Owl's beloved "Squire" It is kinda funny looking, but hey what do you expect!
