Bamboo;
Welcome to the board. The rod in that picture is a 1949 Orvis Battenkill 3/2, 8 1/2 ft. DT 5weight,serial #9715. It was made by Wes Jordan, and is in original condition. It has no short tips, no sets,no scarfs,no delams,or overwraps. It was among the first Orvis impregnated rods, and still has no crazing. A Tentwing is a very large tan or brown Caddis. It's wings lay in such a way that it looks like an old army tent when viewed from the back. I must confess Owl's answer "C" seems like much more fun though. If you dont mind my asking ,with a username like "Bamboo"; whats you favorite? Tight Lines, Tentwing. |

Tentwing,
My favorite stick is a Leonard model 50. About your Orvis the serial numbers are about right for a 48 or 49er,but are you sure it's a Wes Jordan??? Tell me what the node spacing is on that rod,and be a specific as you can. I like trivia, Bamboo |

Well Bamboo, I'm not sure if that's a trick question or a test, but I like both . So in the words of my friend Owl " OK I'll bite"
From 1947 through 1950 there were only two bamboo rod makers at Orvis. Wes Jordon, and under his supervision was Cal Skinner. The node spacing on that rod is 3x3, with the 3rd node of each spacing downset 3/4 of an inch. Collectors trivia maintains that Jordon would upset or downset the 3rd node in each of his spacings. (kind of a silent protest about being told how to build rods by Orvis is my guess.) Wes left Southend in 1939, and was hired by Orvis in the early 40's. Jobs were hard to come by. Wes didn't think that 3x3 spacing was that important, but Orvis did because their customers did. Cal Skinner paid maticulous attention to detail including perfect 3x3 node spacing. At the risk of ticking off Wes Jordon fans,I thinks Cal's rods were every bit as good as Wes'. However collectors realize that because of his innovations Wes Jordon has a huge place in bamboo rod history.I can personally tell you that Wes builds a SWEET casting rod. Is that enough trivia for you? ha ha And again I say welcome to the board. It's nice to be able to talk bamboo with someone. Tight Lines , Tentwing. P.S. The Leonard model 50 is the sweetest casting 8 footer I've ever laid my hands on. It is considered by many to be the #1 fly rod taper of all-time.
