I've done a little bank fishing lately on a pond and small city lake. The crappie were surprising close to shore and taking dry flies as well. I love to catch crappie.

Call 'em what you will, I haven't come across a more onery fish on a fly rod...
they lip your fly and you almost instictively set the hook...then hold on....pound for pound, they are up there with bream...(blue gill--Inidiana....) Speaking of IN....I went to buy some minnow a few years back, here in GA, and thought the medium crappie looked to be the ticket for my trip....At the counter I requested (with my finger) 2 dozen---the clerk replied--24 or the medium crappy 'uns?....I said, well if they are no good, I'll take the others....In IN we called 'em crop-y as well. Fall and spring rule! Where to fish, what to fish....how many vacation/sick days to I have left? Rod ------------------ Rod bhsh! |

I too enjoy the crappie. Since I don't target them, the ones I catch are a bonus. Not the most acrobatic of fighters - as Grandpa said 'you are lucky if they flop once on the way to the boat', but special none the less.
I haven't caught one on the fly rod yet - something else to look forward to this fall. [This message has been edited by FairWeatherFisherman (edited 10-21-1999).] |

All,
This post is about ten days late but, here it is. I began fishing for crappie at a local lake last year and found it to be not only great fun, but a good way to train for light and subtle takes when nymph fishing. The November issue of Florida Sportsman has a good article on flyfishing for crappie, and says that there are only TWO IGFA entries for crappie! Both are less than two pounds....sounds like a challenge to me... Tight lines, and a few flops to the boat RScott ------------------ |
