I was running some small in-line spinners through Lake Rabun near the National Forest Campground last summer, and I had been catching bream, perch, and a b****or two on the trip. Then, as it got dark one evening, my fiancee hooked into a rainbow trout, about 14-15" long. I was wondering, is this an anomaly, or is there a small population of trout in the lake? I have never caught any other trout in the lake. Thank you far any answers you can give me.

I have known about trout in Rabun and Burton for many years. Not only there, but there once was a great trout fishery in Lake Lanier. There was a lot of trout fishing in Lake Lanier near the dam -mostly during generation, which was a feeding turn on, and mostly at night. That was wiped out when Stripers were introduced. I've caught trout in the lake at Vogel State Park as well-but in cool/cold weather. Think they migrate from creek into the lake and back when it heats up. Think someone here also told us about catching trout from the pools in Unicoi Lake when it was drained.

Some guy pulled a three pound brookie out of there or Lake Seed about two years ago. It was in Georgia Outdoor News.

I was told by the NFS campground host on at the Rabun Lake campground that there used to be a stocking program from Burton Dam downstream to Lake Rabun, including Lake Seed.

He said that program was discontinued about five or six years ago, but people continue to catch trout in very small numbers. He did not know why the stocking program was discontinued but assumed that the limited cold water would not support trout during the summer months.

He also said that the Tallulah River immediately below Burton Dam had some very large trout in it, mainly because it's rarely fished due to difficult access. It appeared to me that the stretch of river he was talking about was no more than a half mile long before it became Lake Seed. I did not fish it so I cannot attest to size or numbers of trout, if any.

Thanks for all th information. Being from South Carolina, we try to make our way to the area around Rabun a couple of times a year to fish and camp. We feel kindof special to catch a "rare" fish in the lake. Of course, we promptly released him back to the waters...
