Premium crop broccoli and golden cross cabbage got blanched today. That golden cross cabbage is great b/c it only get about the size of a softball and 2 1/2 pounds instead of those huge heads of other varieties. Picking them frees up a little more space in my garden without getting the tiller out (LOL). The bubbles hybrid brussel sprouts look like they are starting to get little sprouts starting to grow off the stem.

I sprung for some netting and an owl decoy this year. My blackberries were looking great last year until they turned black at which time the crows moved in. After the owl decoy went up.....no more crows!

"We" moved on to summer plants this week. I say "we" because it is 110% my wife's garden but I help built trellises and whatnot and water it and watch it when she is on the road. Tomatoes, hot and bell peppers, cukes, beans (baby Lima, pole, long and bush), black eyed peas, eggplant, carrots, green onions, and probably some things I forgot. Some hanger-on lettuce too. Lower bed has corn, strawberries, blueberries and some holdover collards.
We blanched and froze about 16 quart bags of collards and kale over the weekend. Last of the winter and early spring stuff, besides lettuce. We actually had about 10 months of harvest. Only in late Dec, Jan and early Feb did we not have much going on. Brussels sprouts harvested on Christmas day for meal! Lots of kale and collards. TH

What are everyone's favorite youtube gardening channels? I watch the bayou gardener and also mhp gardener. The bayou gardener is great b/c his videos are more instructional and less of "just a walk through the garden".

does anyone have experience with natchez blackberry?.... or emerald blueberry...
home d has some emerald... it is an UF cultivar.... zone 7-10, so it's marginal up here, even though were are actually zone 7B in the upper piedmont.... i'm concerned a cold period will wipe it out... but i'm all about trying new things.

I dug up a two of my red pontiac potato plants today. I had three good sized potatoes and the rest were small. I'll wait a bit on the other plants. I was told by a friend to wait until they flower and then dig them up. That's when they will be the biggest.

yea kurt... harvesting a few before the main crop comes in is a good idea... that way, you can extend your 'eating season'....
if they flower early (which mine are not this yr), you can try pruning off the flowers.... i've starting pulling some kennebecs... we had mashed pots couple nights ago...store bought pots and fresh from garden are worlds apart... cant hardly believe the difference in taste... also kurt you can dig under plants and pull a few without pulling the whole plant... corn is now well into silking/tasseling phase... we should have ears on the table within two weeks... cant wait... our blueberries are a full month early this yr... so are the plums... however plums mostly rotted on tree... i have no idea why, other than warm winter... that's what i'm blaming everything on this year.... probably shouldve sprayed with dormant oil before it started flowering.... as far as the plague i have, it may be related to the manure.... still doing investigation on that.

was watching an episode of survivor man.... and he was raving about miner's lettuce, native to the sierra nevada mtns...
well, one thing lead to another.... and i'm thinking about ordering some seeds from amazon.com.... here is some info on it.... http://honest-food.net/2011/02/23/on...gift-to-salad/ goal is to have some outside greens during winter... regular lettuce does not make it through most winters... and certainly doesnt grow enough to harvest during late nov dec jan.

yes, it looks like they changed the map... think north hall is still 7b, though their color scheme is difficult to deicpher.... i wish they would use more easily distinguished colors...
make sense.... our lowest low is usually 10-15.... sometimes lower... that's why north hall is on the borderline.... and white is above it.... http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/#
