I assume you are talking about fishing kayaks. I am a Kayaker (steep creeks and waterfalls). However, I have not bought a fishing kayak yet. I have been thinking about buying one recently.

Let me know how your experience has been with fly fishing out of a kayak.

Thanks

SteepCreek.

Right here....

I fish a 14 foot SOT Perception Prism.

We'll have to get out there some time!

I have a Tarpon 120. I hope to fish a local flow tommorrow after church. I primarily float to some shoals and then get out and wade. If you use a drag chain, you can stop and fish a hole, and then move on when you finish. Before I started using a drag chain, I would shoot past a lot of prime water with only a quick cast. The drag chain also keeps the kayak going straight.

I also have a t120. got it last summer. been using it on the hooch. paddle up and float back. wading at the shoal areas. fished from a tube for years. fishing from the yak is interesting. it can be difficult to play a fish and keep from hitting something all at the same time. primarily i use it to get to areas that can be waded. you can also pull up in log jams in deeper water and fish. looking forward to a float trip. all the years i've been fishing the hooch and i have never floated above hwy 20 or below settles. sunday would be an excellent day except there will only be about an hour and a half of fishing time at settles. hopefully we can get some moere favorable release schedules soon.

what happens if the drag chain gets snaged? How long, and heavy of chain do you use? I'm new to the yak fishing and still trying to figure out the ins and outs. For christmas I got a rod holder for the yak. Still trying to figure out the best place to mount it.

FXD; I use an 8" drag chain. I tied the chain on a 6' peice of rope, and then tie this to the back of my kayak. I also wrapped the chain in duct tape. So far, I haven't gotten hung up. I would cut the rope if that happens. There is a guy on Georgia River Fishing that has his drag chain hooked up to a retractable dog lease. It's tied to the handle beside the seat. He can let out the chain and the pull it in when he is ready to move on to another spot. There is a do it yourself section on GRF that explains how to set up a drag chain and the dog lease. It's a good idea. You could have two. One could be set in the front, and the other in the back. That way, if you are moving upstream and want to fish, just let your front chain down and you can fish from your yak. Another advantage is when wading downstream and dragging the kayak behind. The drag chain keeps the kayak out of the way.
