I know there is a section for beyond Georgia...but I never get as much responses as I do if I post it here. Anyone ever fish this park? I am going this weekend for my older brother's birthday and was wondering if anyone had any information that would be helpful (fly patterns, locations, etc.). I have never been there myself, but my brother said it has some beautiful water....but he is not much of a fly fisher so I turn to you all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

Gabe, I hope you've gotten some PMs or emails about this location. I saw a magazine spread about it years ago, and fell in love with the scenery! If memory serves, the main creeks had different personalities and fished very differently, but each had its own magic. Truly a lovely spot.
If you fall back on the old standbys for dries, nymphs and streamers, you ought to catch something somewhere. I hope you get more helpful info, but I know you'll enjoy the trip - it is an exquisite place. |

I have only fished the Horsepasture River which is technically just outside the park boundaries. It is nice river that will give up trout and smallmouth too! It is a beautiful area. I think most of the other rivers in the park will require a good hike so they probably don't get that much fishing pressure.

no pressure at all really. all streams are wild streams in this area. if you go ... however ... do not go alone as this is a rugged area ... but the scenery along the rivers and creeks is spectacular. if you can find it .... fish the Thompson river but like i said be careful many falls on this river too ... some in excess of 100 feet high. take a buddy and notify someone where you are going.
as for flies ... most any of your standard presentations will work ... even though this is a good time of the year for hoppers ... leave them alone. the area is so steep and rugged it makes that type of fishing difficult ..... stick with bushy dries and standards for nymphing ahhh for those of you armchair people http://www.ncwaterfalls.com/jocassee1.htm here you can see the falls in the area ... just look under the gorges state park section. this is not an area for the physically unfit or foolhardy ive been to some of these areas ... but i never would go alone ... and as you all know i am nuts |

I believe the N.C. state record bow came out of the Horsepasture back in the spring. An 18-year-old girl caught it on an ultralight rig, fishing a Rapala with 6-pound test. It weighed 20+ pounds.
