Despite the weather forecast, decided to try the Nantahala on Saturday. Arrived around 10:30 and a quick cruise showed a number of fishermen. My usual spots were taken, so just went to a pullout and started fishing. As it wasn't raining (yet) and there was good cloud cover, I tied on a 14 Stimulator. It didn't live up to its name, so I tied on a Copper John with one BB shot, 3 feet under a strike indicator. Second cast to the tail of a pool, I was into a big fish which ran downstream three pools, with me and my lousy middle age balance trying to keep up. Of course the fish eventually broke the 2.5 pound tippet. Well, fun while it lasted. Then the rain came, misty at first and varying intensity the balance of the day. The fish turned on. Anything in the 14-18 size range with a bead was getting hits: Copper Johns, BH Prince, BHPT, even a few of my own creations. Caught many fish, but only landed one fish with real size to it. I was having one of those days where I couldn't find the right amount of pressure with larger fish. Too little pressure and they came off; too much and they broke off. There are some really big fish in this river. Caught plenty of stocked brookies and rainbows, only a couple of browns. I decided to quit, thinking it was around 5. It was only 3:00 !!! Good day on the water.

Sounds like you had a pretty awesome day fishing. I guess I am going to have to make up some BH nymphs for next weekend. The spousal unit and I will be camping out Friday through Monday up in the Brevard area (and hitting a few DH sections in that area). Anyways, great report.
Cheers, Chris B. |
