We are NC transplants and my son wants to go fishing and catch something on his rod(spinning w/ single hook Rooster Tails/Joe's Flies, Etc.) not daddie's flyrod.
Anyway, we tried the Smith DH about a month ago w/ no luck. I've fished several of the NC DH, where you have to watch where you wade to keep from stepping on the trout, but at the Smith that was not the case at all. My question has the Smith been stocked any better lately or is that just the way the Smith DH is??? It is the perfect size for a child, but I want him to catch some trout. |

Smith is kinda like a product of Dukes Creek. The fish get spooked real easily and they are really tough to figure out. It is one of those spots that really educate you on Georgia mountain trout, it becomes a labor of love. Good luck, try using a BWO - 16, and different really small pheasnt tails, no beadheads this early in the year I have found them to spooked.

Try fishing the Hooch through Helen. A lot of people do pretty good through there with spinners and fly gear. Check with Unicoi Outfitters about stockings and which spinners to use. There are several places where a youngun can bank fish or wade easily and catch fish.
Smiths can be pretty tough at times. If Smiths is your goal, go during the week, and if possible right after a rain or during the rain. Stained water equals less picky fish. Hope this helps.
