Exclamation Poison Ivy Info

Ah ha! I KNEW something had changed....I used to be immune to PI. This report claims modern CO2 levels have boosted PI's allergic properties.

I get it very bad when i get it, and I've used everything to combat it. I can say that Zanfel is the only thing that truley works. Mark

I have had great success with Tecnu. It is a soap that washes away the usherol oil that is the culprit in poison ivy, oak, etc.

Once it has set in the best thing to use in my opinion is bleech. Take a q-tip and itch the heck out of it til' it opens up, then take another q-tip, dip it in bleech, grit your teeth and try not to cry like a little girl and it will dry it out in no time.
WARNING: not intended for cry babies or girly' men.

Default bleach

Will agree with the bleach method. While serving as a US Marine this method is taught to scout/snipers to rid the poison. It does work but you have to scrub it till it bleeds, positively releasing all the poisons. I use a toothbrush dipped in bleach. Definitely not for the week, it will leave a chemical burn but clears up immediately with no further itch IMO thats easier to deal with then weeks of rash and discomfort. The lotion mentioned above works well also, but if you don't do exactly as the directions say it can and will spread!

I like that quote Alaska!!I had a High school teacher tell me about that "method". It's one of those things that'll put hair on your chest(make a man out-a-ya), unless you're a metro-sexual, that used to be a good thing

Post MD Advice

An MD I know had just finished an outdoor first responder course and we were talking about poison ivy and oak. Briefly, to avoid the rash, you have to wash the plant's oils off your skin within 30 minutes of exposure, otherwise, you got it! Second, any liquid from the rash and blisters is created by your body and will not "spread" the poison. Scraping and draining may provide some temporary relief, but in the long term only delays the healing. I have done a lot of research on the topic because I am highly alergic to the ivy and can break out just by looking at it - or least it seems that way.

The only real "relief" and speeding up the healing process is cortesone at the prescription strength levels.

Last note, one of my great uncles was incapacitated for a month by poison ivy. He was a farmer and one winter they were clearing brush and burning it. Seems they had a lot of large poison ivy vines in the brush and he became infected by the smoke from the fire. He had it in his eyes, nasal passages and throat, basically any body parts that were moist and could be reached by the smoke.
