I try to take photos of some of the more challenging repairs or restorations. Here are a few rods that I picked up at the boo meet & greet earlier this month. To stinkbait and AM, your rods are finished. I hope you'll be happy with the results.
The photo on the left was a repair of a previous scarf joint repair. The joint was done under the wrap so as to be less conspicuous. However it ended up failing. I took the guide & wraps off, re-glued and bound it. I then put a clear silk splint wrap over it, followed by a re-wrap of the guide, and re-varnish. The photo in the middle is of a rod that had a clean break at the ferrule. I removed the bamboo within the ferrule, cut the tip section as close to break as possible without getting in the broken bamboo. rounded the ferrule area, and epoxyed it on, and then re-wrapped it. I put the original next to it for comparison. The third picture is from a partial break, where the sections started to seperate. I re-glued and bound it, let it dry, and then scraped the excess glue off. I wrapped a clear silk wrap splint on it, and then re-varnished it. I also put it next to the original for comparison. All in all, I hope I've given some new life to some old rods. Mark BTW, the photos apear jagged/pixelated to me until I hit the little + on the screen when viewing full sized. I sized the files as large as possible to show detail.

Good looking work Mark. Except for slight variance in thread color, I couldn't tell any difference at all.
Question for you. What type rubbing compound/wax do you use on reelseats to cover scratches? What about on the blank? Do you wax and buff or just simply revarnish?

Mark,
I concur, very nice work! I sure wish I could get my guide wraps to look that clean and professional.

The repair work looks great Mark. I really appreciate it. I am going to try to get over to your place on Saturday morning and pick it up. I hope to get to fish with it some Sunday afternoon.
