Default Extreme House Remodeling

Among the myriad other things we have (potentially) planned to upgrade our "fixer upper", is turning our attic into living space.

The most significant issue i can envision right now is doing the stairs.

Any one done this before and can share some wisdom?... tia.

I have thought about the same thing for our house. Some of the things to consider:
  • HVAC. You will now have a lot more space to condition
  • Electricity for HVAC, outlets and lights
  • Need to beef up the floor of the attic for more applied weight?
  • Moving roof supports, depending how your house is constructed
  • Additional insulation
  • Natural light: dormer windows, skylights?
  • Additional bathroom?
  • Moving plumbing vents
  • Potentially losing access to items installed in the ceiling below: can lights, entertainment system wiring, etc
  • Permits/inspections
Good luck.

Cool

She thought you said "get a hubby"---so she thought up something to keep you occupied while she "shops around".

Default Well ...

As long as she ain't shooting for another triple play you're okay. Then you'd REALLY be doing some remodeling.

On that same note is it possible to put a basement in an existing house that sits over a dirt crawl space? Just curious, because I've considered doing that to my house, as well as adding living space in the attic.
