Default Chattooga:Observing

It was amateur hour at Burrell's Ford yesterday. I was not fishing, but watched many many young anglers fishing all over the place, I didn't see anything caught but they all looked like they were having a good time. The river certainly is low, about half the flow I'm used to seeing up there.

All the rocks I lifted up had puh-lenty of #18 stonefly nymphs, at least that's what I think they were. There were two different color varieties, one was clearish with tiny black bands, the other mostly black. The only flying insects were #24-#26 gnats.

I only spyed one small 8 inch rainbow cruising around in a low-no current sidepool, didn't see him rise for anything and he didn't seem too spooked by me either.

I like the fact that SC has actually put up "No Camping" signs on all those illegal campsites by the road, mainly just to avoid confusion because it's hard to tell how many yards you are from the road once you put a few hemlocks between yourself and the car.

I did notice alot more camper trash than normal, usually people up there tend to be more considerate, but I noticed alot more than normal. Plastic bags, paper towels, that sort of thing. The kind of trash you don't just "not notice" or accidentally leave behind.

The whole point of the trip was to stop by Mountain Rest Orchards and pick up a winter stock of apples for butter and canning, and Cider for whiskey mixing, but alas, they are closed do to the late april freeze, and we settled for another guy down 107 with Arkansas Blacks. They are now canned. But alas no cider. I was really looking forward to it. It's heart wrenching to know it will be at least another year before I will get to have some again.

Sure, they've got cider from concentrate all over the place, but there's nothing like an unlabeled milk jug full fo thick creamy local "I made this" cider that you are forced to drink in a week before it becomes vinegar.. good for bbq sauce.

So, where's the Chattooga reports? There were enough people out there... I expect some stories. If you saw a panther, make sure to include that. Thank you.
