i watched the TU One the rise where they were using a spey rod...is there really any place in ga where a spey rod could be used??? i think it would be cool to learn how to cast one of those things

I watched a guy using one down at Paces one day during the winter. Talk about a big fly rod, sucker had to be 12 foot long. But I gotta believe it has limited applications here in Georgia.

Assuming that you are mean using them with spey casts and not overhead casts, you can use them anyplace where you can wade on the Hooch or below the dam on the Taccoa. They aren't particularly useful with float tubes or watercraft unless you are using overhead casts. There was a Britt a few yars ago that would regulary fish the Hooch with one.

I believe Keith was from New Zealand.

There are certain applications where a spey is useful, but for the most part in the southeast, they're a novelty. One area where they would particularly shine is when fishing behind a dam for stripers. I know a few guys who do this and have pretty good luck. Heavy heads, fast water, and limited wading.

I've fished mine a lot on the hooch, mostly to try out new rods, lines, or practice for trips for salmon/steelhead. They're a blast to cast...

Yep, it was Keith. I was rigging-up one in the parking lot too and its pretty easy to see them from a ways off. I appreciated the free lesson that he provided. Nice guy.

By the way, one thing about speys that is useful is after a few sessions with them, your single-hand roll casting noticably improves too.
