Hook- Mustad 94840 Thread- black Wings- married sections of orange, black, and white duck quills Tail- white hackles rib- gold tinsel Body - orange floss hackle- furnace Tied this up a few years back, thought it would go good with Chucks wet fly.  |

Some things to notice for tier's of all levels, myself included.
 Note the smooooooth floss body, no lumps or bumps and a very nice "carrot" shape. This comes from having a very good and smooth foundation to work on. There are several ways to get this foundation and I'm not sure which one 94840 used; built up with tying thread or with floss. Look at where the rib is tied in (under the hook shank) and the first of the wraps begin. There is also 5 wraps. This shows the Ray Bergman influence. The length and width of the wings are right on. Slightly longer than the hackle and approximately hook gap in width. Too long and the fly will have a tendency to twist and also fall over on it's nose. This is an excellent example of the fly tier's art. My hat's off to 94840 for such a great example. Respectfully Chuck

Good information. It is a great looking fly and I see what you mean about the carrot shaped body and no bumps or ridges. Let me jot that down in my mental notes for future reference.

Thanks for the words everybody. Chuck- thanks,its feels good when somebody can pic up on the fine points.
A couple things- like Chuck said you need a good underbody for a smooth look. I always do the underbody with the tying thread instead of floss. The reason is the thread gives a firmer foundation, if you were to do it all in floss, when you wrap your ribbing it may pucker the floss instead of laying right on top. The other thing is when using floss not only do I use single strand but I will even split that down depending on the pattern. |

one quick question for you 94840 did you cut the wings to size once you tied them on???
