Bump...any chance David Cutcliffe might be a candidate for Phil's job?

One coach who has already taken his name out of the running: Steve Spurrier.
The former Florida head coach and current South Carolina leader told the Associated Press Monday there was a time not so long ago that he would have jumped at the opportunity to coach the Vols, but that time has passed. The Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback grew up rooting for UT in Johnson City, Tennessee. He told the AP that four or five years ago, he would have considered the job in Knoxville when looking to return to the college game after his unsuccessful sting with the Washington Redskins in the NFL. So with Spurrier out of the mix, the following are several coaches who could possibly be considered candidates to replace Fulmer as the next Tennessee head coach: Lane Kiffin Most recently head coach of the Oakland Raiders before being fired in last month; former offensive coordinator at Southern California; has expressed high level of interest in being a head coach at a major college program; known as a top-level recruiter. Mike Leach Currently head coach at No. 2 Texas Tech (9-0 in 2008); in eight years with the Red Raiders has steadily built them into a championship contender in one of the nation's top conferences; TTU knocked off No. 1 Texas last Saturday, marking the biggest win in the program's history. Jim Grobe Currently the head coach at Wake Forest (5-3); in eight years with the Deamon Deacons has built them into title contenders in the ACC; named 2006 AP National Coach of the Year after leading WFU to 11 wins and the school's first-ever BCS Bowl bid; former head coach at Ohio University. Tim Brewster Currently the head coach at Minnesota (7-2); went from a 1-11 season in his first year to making the Golden Gophers bowl eligible and a Big Ten title contender in this, his second year; former tight ends coach for San Diego Chargers. Todd Graham Currently the head coach at Tulsa (8-1); went 10-4 in his first year as Golden Hurricane head coach in 2007 and led team to victory in GMAC Bowl; former Rice head coach; took an Owls' team that finished 1-11 the year before and finished 7-5 in his first season, earning the school's first bowl trip in 46 years. Brian Kelly Currently the head coach at Cincinnati (6-2); went 10-3 in first season with the Bearcats; former Central Michigan head coach, where he led the Chippewas to the Mid-American Conference Championship in his third year; former Grand Valley State (D-II) head coach, where he compiled a record of 118-35-2 in 13 seasons; two-time Division II Coach of the Year. Jon Gruden Currently head coach of the Tampa Bay Bucanneers (5-3, NFL); compiled a career record of 91-77 in eleven seasons in the NFL; became youngest head coach in NFL history to win a Super Bowl after leading Bucs to 48-21 win over Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII; former UT graduate assistant. Will Muschamp Currently the defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Texas (8-1); widely regarded as one of the brightest young coaches in the college game; former defensive coordinator under Tommy Tuberville at Auburn; former defensive coordinator and linebackers coach under Nick Saban at LSU and with the Miami Dolphins (NFL); former University of Georgia walk-on. Chris Peterson Currently the head coach at Boise State (8-0); has compiled a 31-3 record in three seasons with the Broncos; led BSU to undefeated regular season and the program's first-ever BCS Bowl (victory over Oklahoma in Fiesta Bowl) in his first season.

I wonder if Muschamp would take it if offered?? His stock at TX might be down a bit since TT put that loss on the Horns. I don't know if Cutcliffe is even interested or if UT is looking at him. I've heard his name on several games where UT was having offensive doldrums..."If David Cutcliffe was still here, we'd probably see...", etc. etc.

what I heard was that Muschamp does not have enough experience to come into a TN, maybe a Clemson but not TN. I also heard speculation that he would go after Kirby Smart from Alabama, Mike Bobo from UGA to be his coordinators.
What about someone like Chris Hatcher from GA Southern? He has won vevery where he has been and has a DII National Title. He has been QB coach for some big time college QBs and Pro QBs, so he knows how to deal with the elite athlete. He is a young guy that will put in the hours and I think he could recruit well. He was on the short list for Ga Tech so he is on the DI radar. Any thoughts? I also heard TN may not be interested in Leach because he is so different from anything that conservative place has ever had, he may not fit in in other words. ![]() ![]()

No doubt about it, UGA DC Willie Martinez would be the perfect candidate for the job. Shoot, some at UGA would even pay his salary for a few years. Please, please, please!

Only one comment; no way Gruden is leaving his cushy pro coaching job.

Be careful with this thread, Buck. Feelings could get hurt. You might want to have The Management close this one down.
