Default Thinking of going to the Fly Fishing Show?

What’s there?
Lots of new stuff, with many new rods/reels/lines rigged and ready for you to try out on the casting areas. Lots of “specials” on everything from clothing and apparel to tackle and fly tying materials. More catalogs than you can carry. Lots of pretty ladies. A bunch of grizzled old guys that can help you cast, match tackle, tie flies, pick accessories and plan trips.

Come to think of it, not all are grizzled. Nor are they all male. Just a cool place for an angler to browse, talk, learn and shop. Good opportunity to get a book signed, too.

The seminars are worth the price of admission, at least to me. Everybody knows Dave Whitlock, but there are some extremely talented local folks who can get you pointed in the right direction. Let me introduce you.

Who’s local there?
Jimmy Harris is known as the “Guru” for a reason.

Gary Merriman has influenced many an Atlanta angler via his Fish Hawk store.

Bill Oyster is a young, talented bamboo rod maker. Even if you’ve only polished a tabletop, you won’t believe Bill’s craftsmanship and artistry.

Henry Cowen talks funny, but he knows how to catch stripers. If you have any doubts, check out our Warmwater forum here. I attended one of Henry’s seminars, and I was astounded at the details he shared. If striped bass catch your fancy, you need to catch his class.

Chris Scalley guides for trout and ducks, but is best known as a conservationist who makes a difference. Check out his coldwater foundation.

Mack Martin is a rod builder, casting instructor, fly tier and traveling angler who still finds time to be active with Trout Unlimited.

Kent Edmonds guides for multiple species, teaches fly casting and tests knots professionally. You need to see some of his big-river, heavy-water trips for stripers. Big stripers. I prefer his shoal bass episodes, personally.

We also have two guys who’ve graced the pages of national magazines.

James Buice handles the Fish Hawk’s Adventure Travel department, despite looking like a teenager. His articles have been interesting and instructional, too.

David Cannon has worn many hats in the outdoor press. He’s enjoying success with photography now, and can help all of us take better photos.

Two other local guys bring a wealth of knowledge to the show.

Drew Gregory (Basserdrew to the GRF crowd) is a passionate lover of moving water. Drew has learned many tips and tactics for taking river bass with conventional tackle. And, I think his other car is a kayak.

Randy Vining (Riverpirate to GRF and the kayak fishing crowd) lives to launch his kayak on rivers and chase fish. He does it well enough to be representing Ocean Kayak. Ask him to show you his boat.

I really hope to see a lot of you there. Please stop by and introduce yourself. I will be in the OUTSIDE WORLD booth between seminars.

I'm looking forward to meeting Drew Gregory. The way that guy catches shoal bass is amazing. He's my hero!

I am hoping to get Dave Whitlock to sign my copy of "Art Flick's Master Fly Tying Guide" Dave wrote a chapter in the book about tying western fly patterns and there is a great picture of him when he was quite young puffing on a pipe and holding a cup of coffee at his tying bench.

Both me and the wife are excited to go, kayak fishing, fly fishing, fly tying, sheesh, I am afraid I might have to go both days just to soak it all in.

I have really enjoyed the Shows I've been to in previous years.I have a family commitment that weekend and won't be able to make it this year .

Sounds like TU's Rabun Rendezvous and this show need to work on coordinating the dates so they don't conflict . Would help attendance at both it would seem.

Hope to be there as well - teaching a class in Columbus, but I am going to try and make the trip anyway. I need the expertise.
