Default Toccoa

Does anyone know if the Toccoa is wadeable or is it still running to strong from all the rain? Would really like to go up in the morning. I went to the Ami at the Steele bridge for an hour or so after my golf game today just before dark and man it was still running strong.

If they aren't generating (7a.m. - 11 a.m. Sunday, then again at 6p.m.) it's wadable. Still stained some the further you get away from the dam.

The DH section is running over 700 this morning (Sunday). Way too high to safely wade. Needs to drop back to at least 400 before you try it.

Went up to the Toccoa yesterday and caught only 5 and missed several more. It was running very hard and high so I hard had to pick and choose where to fish. I did manage to find a couple of slower pockets with fish in them. I fished mostly down towards the two islands and below, where is was around mid thigh deep (was a little under knee deep the last time I went up there). All in all I had a great time. i worked on my casting skills and my presentation skills, Both of which was tough with the high fast water and the wind. I did see one other fisherman up there.

Where do you get the info on how fast the waters is running?

And yes I had on a PFD!

Scroll down the page to "Toccoa at Dial". It's dropped considerably this morning but still very hazardous to wade.

Well, there is no "normal", just levels at which everyone probably feels comfortable wading in. Much above 400 cfs and you're going to be taking a real chance on staying upright all day. Even at 400 cfs, you need to be extremely careful. Down around 300 cfs or lower, you should be able to fish most of the river. Because of the rock formations in that stretch, the Toccoa DH is probably the most treacherous stretch of water to wade in the state and it's not a bad idea to have a wading staff with you at any level.

Question "most treacherous water in the state ...."

That's an interesting statement and no challenge from me to Mr. Harris! But we all have those places where we feel the greatest risk so I am thinking it might be fun - during one very COLD week - to do a little poll on where is the most treacherous water. Could well be the Toccoa DH hands down, but I might consider the Toccoa tail water due to the rock formations coupled with the rapid and sometimes unannounced releases. And keep it to Georgia. ---JCK---
