What are you guys' favorite books on the subject? There are two types you predominantly find, the informative guide type, and the narrative life/fishing tales stories. How about your favorites in each genre?

Don't know about books(I have Midge Magic ordered and on the way), but the movie "A River Runs Through It" is a pretty good life/guide/tale piece on the subject of Fly Fishing.

As far as guide books, I like Fly Fishing Montana by Brian and Jenny Grossenbacher. It's to-the-point and features a TON of their awesome photography on one of the most scenic fly fishing destinations anywhere.
For the other type, I like The View From Rat Lake by John Gierach. I know that Trout Bum is his classic work, but I think Rat Lake has his best stories. |

Trout Eyes: True Tales of Adventure, Travel, and Fly-Fishing, by William Tapply; a great collection of fly-fishing stories from one of America's outstanding outdoor authors. And, The Yellowstone Fly-Fishing Guide, by Craig Matthews and Clayton Molinero; a must have for anyone planning to fish our crown jewel National Park, Yellowstone. With this book and a quick stop to Craig's fly shop in West Yellowstone, Blue Ribbon Flies, for the latest info on hatches and water conditions, anyone can successfully fish the vast waters of the park like an experienced veteran.

One of my favorites was an old book about fishing in the Smokies just when it was being converted into a park. It was written by a guy named Casque and called Hunting and Fishing in the Great Smokies.
Another one is called Trout by Ray Burger (I think) Both books are old school and still talk about using silk for leaders and bamboo. Kind of makes us apprecitate not having to prep the night before by soaking our gut leaders. |

something with small words and lots of pictures.
Seriously though, anything vintage or by Thomas McGuane. Jim Harrison's bio also has a neat snippet on fly fishing/living in the Keys with McGuane and a few others. It's nice to see writers outside the "industry" writing about a sport they are passionate about.

Favorite guide book is Fran Betters' Ausable River Guide. It's fifty + years of insight into one of the premier trout waters in the east from a legendary fisherman and guide.
Favorite coffee table book is James Prosek's Trout - An Illustrated History. Great way to pass the time until the tribs flow.Dave Whitlock's Guide to Aquatic Trout Food is a favorite "how to" book. |
