Thumbs up Sgt. Burgamy Named DNR LE Supervisor of the Year

Usually I post info about DNR personnel in the DNR Corkboard forum, but this is way to good not to be seen widely. Thanks to Jeff Durniak for the commentary. And a sincere tip o' the NGTO cap to Sgt. Burgamy for a job well done.

In Georgia, we call them Conservation Rangers. We have good ones. You see many of them in action as instructors at next Saturday's public events, like Unicoi Outdoor Adventure Day.

Just because you have not seen one, does not mean that they have not seen you.... If you look like an Orvis catalog, they may have decided not to reveal themselves, but to use that work time to stalk farther down the ridge and put their binoculars on the dude with a rod set in a forked stick on the artificials-only section of the Hooch. LE likes camo as much as you do!

This one is worth celebrating. Mike's a great co-worker here in the Gainesville region as he and his work unit keep Lake Lanier safe, track down night hunters, teach hunter education, and patrol our favorite fishing spots. Have you ever worked a noon to 2AM boat shift on a 95-degree July Saturday?

Congrats Mike!

Short version of a true Burgamy story for you anglers:

Lanier tailwater float tuber (has ball cap on backwards): sees downstream angler, steers for him. Casting a spinner, says " How's the fishing?
Bank Angler below Highway 20: replies, "pretty good!"
Float angler: paddles closer to bank
Bank Angler: starting to get peeved about invasion of his fishing space
Floater: turns cap around to show its DNR-LE patch, and says, "Game Warden. Mind if I see your fishing license and your lure?"
Angler: "Wow. You guys are GOOD. Here's my license."
Floater: "Thanks. Have a good day." Burgamy turns cap around, floats on 'round the bend to next angler...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LAKE LANIER’S SGT. BURGAMY NAMED DNR LAW ENFORCEMENT SUPERVISOR OF YEAR SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (Sept. 18, 2009) - The Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division recently selected Sergeant Mike Burgamy of the Gainesville Law Enforcement office as the 2009 Supervisor of the Year.

Burgamy oversees DNR Law Enforcement operations in Banks, Barrow, Hall and Jackson Counties, including Lake Lanier. He is a 15-year veteran of the department and began serving as sergeant in 2005.

“Sgt. Burgamy is dedicated to serving Georgia’s citizens while protecting our natural resources,” says Lt. Col. Homer Bryson of the Wildlife Resources Division. “He is charged with protecting citizens utilizing one of the state’s most heavily-populated resources, Lake Lanier, and is persistent in working above and beyond job duties and expectations.”

An experienced conservation ranger, Burgamy also serves as an instructor for the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council and is certified in emergency vessel operation tactics, verbal judo, standardized field sobriety tests and defensive tactics.

He has served for ten years as a board member for the Hall County Safe Kids program, which provides free personal floatation devices to boaters on northeast Georgia lakes. In addition, Burgamy also serves as one of only two drug recognition experts in the department.

He also recently completed the Professional Management Program at Columbus State University.

To help with language barriers often encountered while on the job, Burgamy took initiative to learn Spanish, allowing him to easily communicate with Spanish-speaking customers.

Burgamy’s rangers commend their supervisor for covering the two empty ranger positions in Hall County over the past year. Burgamy answered 60 complaints totaling almost 100 hours and was involved in ten search and rescue incidents.

Burgamy previously received recognition as Boating Safety Officer of the Year in 2004 and Ranger of the Year for the Gainesville Law Enforcement office in 1997 and 1998.

For more information on the 2009 Supervisor of the Year Award, call the Wildlife Resources Division Law Enforcement Headquarters office at (770) 918-6408.

My thanks as well. Thanks for posting this Don. With things as tight as they are at the State right now, I hope all of our great DNR guys and gals are able to keep up their morale. I'm so pleased to know that we have such great guys out there, like Sgt. Burgamy, working on our behalf. My congratulations to him on his award.

And, hey! The guy managed to mix a little fishing with his official duties! That's some serious multitasking!

Oops! Remind you of anyone else?
