Despite the grim weather forecast for today I had full intent to go and get some fish. Yesterday did not work out for this particular project. At all. I set the alarm for early (anything earlier than usual time-for-work-wakeup is early, especially on the weekend). It was dark and wet. After walking the dog and filling the thermos with some coffee I made my way out of the city.
![]() Man can’t live on coffee alone so this was the first stop. ![]() As it got lighter out and I made some headway up the road I can’t say that things were looking too much better…but I planned to fish and fish I would. Maybe the rain would keep the crowds away (lemonade!) ![]() I pressed on. After a quick stop at Unicoi Outfitters to pick up some flies and Mr. Cannon’s new book (a very nice looking book, at that) I made my way through a surprisingly empty oddly Bavarian-looking village. No traffic. That is odd when the leaves are changing. Oh, as soon as I walked out the door of the fly shop the rain started in earnest. Nearly at my destination I stopped to take some photos. Yeah, it was wet out. No doubt about that. ![]() I found a parking spot in a lot that was not empty (as I was expecting). The rain was off and on. I set up my Dredger-inspired changing station. The new fishing car was proving itself adequate for the task. ![]() Even with the rain it sure was pretty. The clouds and showers kept the scene changing from minute to minute. ![]() On to the river… ![]() ![]() I rigged up and planned my attack after visiting for a few minutes with a gentleman I met who was up from Dublin for his annual week-long trip. That is the great thing about fishing, it is perfectly acceptable to strike up conversations with total strangers. I hit the water with my hood up against the rain. The creek was fairly high but not overly stained. The already saturated ground put most of the rainfall straight into the creek. The ground was soggy and puddled up with standing water. I ventured into the water and found a swift flow that was colder than I wanted to put more than my hand in. Easy and slow footing was the plan! Well, the fish did not disappoint. I don’t have too many fish pictures. This is due to a mix of off and on heavy rain (and no waterproof camera), just having too much fun catching to mess with fish pics, and the non-waterproof camera’s battery died. Trusty iPhone to the rescue. So, here a couple of the fish that cooperated…I caught one or two on some “junk food flies” but I got some honestly on nymphs too! ![]() ![]() I caught 3 or so quality fish of the size in the top picture, one of which was a pretty brown that slipped way without his picture being taken under the cover of heavy rain. The others were smaller but fun. Any fish “on” is fun IMO. As a bonus I had a Dredger sighting and an actual conversation when he was done with work. Under his watchful eyes I caught nothing but a bush! I got a solid recommendation for lunch and this was my last stop before heading south. ![]() All-in-all, a great but wet day and a chance to get out and do some driving and see some fall colors. TH

I apologize for another "fish on a rock picture" but this one shows a sense of scale. My feet are there with the fish. And the leaves are really big leaves.
![]() There are nice fish to be had! Get thyself to the creek. Th

Really enjoyed this report... kinda out of the norm... loved the pic of the lodge... and the bow with head sticking out of water.

Nice report. I'll be headed that way next Fri. Hope my luck is as good as yours was. Thanks for the report.
By the way what were your "junk food flies", if you don't mind me asking? Shoot me a PM. |

No secrets here, I stopped by Unicoi Outfitters on the way up and asked for some fly recommendations. I picked up a few patterns. I ended up opting to fish a Y2K alone as well as with a nymph dropper.
The WRD folks have done an excellent job of raising and stocking some fine DH fish again this year. Despite never-ending budget cuts and furloughs. If you haven't already done so today get out and hit a Georgia DH stream for some fun. TH

Lemonade, indeed!
I feel your pain at the constant lack of productivity on FIOF (Forget It On Furlough) Day.....for me, it's Personal Leave. Kiss of death; like packing a net! ![]() |
