Default 2009 Fling: Thanks to Many!

Well, another NGTO Fall Fling is in the books and by all accounts this one was a great success. Through the generosity of our sponsors, supporters, and members, we were able to have another great fund raising event. I somewhat fear doing thank you posts, as I know I will miss some very deserving folks, but let me give this a shot:

First off, thanks to my fellow BOD members for a great team effort. This organization is blessed with a great group of dedicated Directors that put a lot of time and effort into each and every Fling.

Next, all of the volunteers that stepped up to help. Too many to list here, but you know who you are! From parking cars, to helping with the auction to cleaning the place up when the event was over, your hard work was noted and greatly appreciated.

And a special thanks as always to Pat Markey and the great team of dedicated DNR professionals that run the Buford Hatchery. Pat, words really cannot express how grateful we are for allowing us to use the hatchery year in and year out for our events.

They say an Army marches on it's stomach and NGTO is no different! Thanks to B983 (Brent Langley) for GoldStar BBQ for working all night long smoking all that pork! I do not think anyone left the Fling hungry and there was very little leftovers as usual!

A few notables I would also like to list:
  • SteveL and his amazing furling machine! Steve demonstrated this amazing craft to many and raised $165 for NGTO! Thanks Steve
  • Steve Hudnson - what can I say, this guy is giver! He taught not one, but two fly tying classes today
  • Jeff Gillespie (jeffg) and Mark Ellis (Fish) for another great job teaching folks about fishing our beloved Hooch DH!
  • Neal Osborn for presenting a great seminar on digital photography. My father attended this one and is a shutterbug himself and said that Neal did a fantastic job!
  • RocketRoy and his world famous casting games! Another great course Roy, no one does it better!
  • Mudpuppy and the Drag Free Drift seminar - this was a resounding success and everyone who attended had a great time. Superb job Deb!
  • Chuck Morris and Prowler for tying flies almost non-stop for 5 hours to demonstrate how much fun it is to learn to tie!

And one last shout out for all of our Sponsors and Supporters who donated their goods and services to help us with this year's fund raiser. NGTO appreciates our sponsors and supporters very much and hope that you as members will do business with these fine companies and individuals. They supported us, now we need to support them!

Again, I know I have missed many who deserve special thanks, but please know that I am very grateful for your hard work in helping make this year's Fling another great success.

Now, it is time to go fishing! See you on the river!

Default Thanks NGTO

Dear All,

It was a pleasure meeting everyone at the NGTO Fling. You all (Y'all) have a great group and kudos on raising some respectable money. Everyone had great questions during the photography lecture and I can see that many of you are interested in taking better pictures. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at anytime at nealpod@mac.com.

I will post a follow up tutorial and pictures from the event at www.flyartstudio.com in a few days. Below are a few shots from the hatchery and the ferruled leader demo. I didn't get a chance to see any fly tying demos so unfortunately no fly art closeups. These are examples of the composition and lighting principles we discussed during the lecture.

Best,
Neal

This presentation was more than awesome. I am sure we will start seeing better pictures with better compositioncoming very soon. I know I am already seeing pictures in a different way.
I love looking at Neal's site and I am sure you will too. Give his site a little traffic and you might find some great ideas for your fishing and tying shots.
Thanks Neal

Thumbs up Casting Results.....Fall , 2009!

Well done, all you intrepid casters, who stepped up to the Fling Casting Games this year! The Casting Games theme this year was a 9 hole golf-type course, with mostly moderate distances, and was almost free of obstacles, that saw a tie,for first place......since our pace setter had to leave at noon, for a scheduled school play-off game, thus precluding a cast-off to determine the winner! .......DRUM ROLL PLEASE!!!! Therefore it was the determiination of the Games rule board {me!}, that a cast off will be held @ the Spring Fling between two Teenagers that scored an under-par excellent score of 12 points ea., besting all of the men/ladies/boy/girls/, that played the game,in addition to the bragging rights only, Long distance cast,of near 90 feet, by several of the attendees. Seth "T BOY" Sullivan , who had to leave early, will have to go up against the 13 Y.O. phenom., Andrew Brown, who has been attending the Fling and casting fly rods since he was 7 Y.O.! Also of note is that our 2008 Fling casting games winner was Seth "T BOY" Sullivan, who has earned his 2008 spot of honor on the respected perpetual Winners Plaque, that hangs in the Unicoi Outfitters Helen Fly Shop! Thus "T BOY " will be attempting to be our first two-time winner, in the spring cast -off! CONGRATULATIONS! Thanks go to the several members, who stepped up to layout/take down the course and do the scoring all day.....great folks all,and fun!! Regards, Rocketroy P.S. And to all you casting vets, that helped along the newbies......THANKS!

This fling was a huge success and again I'd like to really express some thanks to Neal Osborn (nealpod) for putting on a fantastic seminar on photography and welcome him to NGTO. Everyone I spoke with who sat in, really picked up a few tips that they can use right away. I'd also like to thank Nu2trout (Keith B.) for helping with bringing Neal to NGTO. While it pains me to be nice to Nu2trout.... Great job.

I don't think we can thank SteveL enough for the furling demonstration. Not only did he raise $165.00 for NGTO he did so without even stopping for lunch.

Thank you to everyone else who helped out and all of the members who stepped up and supported NGTO with their generosity. Without our members, none of this would have been possible.

Now, once this mysterious bruise on my right leg heals and limp goes away, I'll see y'all on the water.

Default Had a GREAT time!

Great group of folk. Many thanks to my old friend Steve Hudson for the fly tying class. Thanks to Buck and all NGTO staff?!? servants maybe?!? Thanks to Henry Cowen and whoever else had a hand in the bucket raffle. The two Bass/Saltwater tying supplies bags I won will be well used as I will be tying with this stuff soon as well as wrapping a rod in the 9-10wt. range for salt! Thanks for the door-prize as well, I was really pushing my luck then!

Default This was my first...

...and thanks for skipping the opener of deer season! Also a big thanks to you BODs who organized and carried the day. Enjoyed meeting more members and thanks to Deb for letting us help mentor some of those just starting out or wishing to improve on a certain technique.

Always good to see the Dredger (I missed the bath!) and learn something every time I listen to him.

Thanks GB for the biscuit!

Nu2, guess I left before you got there. Couldn't stay past lunch.

Nice to meet you Merganser!

Now, if we could just change the Spring Fling date to a week before turkey season....

These pics pretty much sum up my Fling experience. All my almost 4 year old daughter wanted to do was feed the trout. Oh and eat a donut from GWFF. I think they might have themselves a new member. Great weather!! Wish we could have stuck around for the BBQ. Who won the NuCanoe?
