Default Thunderstorm Creek

I made the trip up north to Thunderstorm Creek with The Endless Enigma for the second time within a week. The air temps were low and our spirits were up as were had great confidence in this stream. We arrived at the mountain and loaded up for the hike. Even though we did well last week on this stream, we decided to head downstream in search of bigger fish. We billy goated our way down the ridge and got to some pristine water. I tied on a yellow stimulator and went to work. I lost 7 fish in a row on that fly before getting frustrated and tying on a streamer to land this beauty:

I moved across the stream and started stripping my streamer in the same pool and hooked into a large brookie. It's not too often you run into a situation where a brook trout breaks you off, but this one did. So far the score was one landed, with 8 lost. This seemed like it was going to be one of those days. After breaking my line, I decided to tie back on the stimulator and headed downstream where EE was fishing and caught this little guy:

It looked as though I was back in the groove when I looked upstream toward where EE was fishing and saw nothing but black sky. That's when Thor struck his mighty hammer to the earth. It was about this time when EE and I learned how to run across water and leap mountains in a single bound. We made it to the protective cover of the mountain laurel and watched the bottom fall out for about 45 minutes as we tried desperately to keep our phones dry. I had very little faith in the high dollar waterproof "Glad" phone bag I had in my pack. We survived the storm and decided that we should go upstream where we can be closer to the truck in case the big storms rolled in again.
We got to our next honey hole and the next two casts were lost fish on the stimulator. Having enough of that fly, I put on a same sized Elk Hair and headed downstream. On the third cast, I got into a beautiful 10 inch brookie that actually took some drag. I failed to get a picture as he escaped unscathed. I fished a little more downstream and caught another before meeting back up with EE at one of our favorite money holes. We stared fishing and it seemed that something was wrong with this hole today as we both got skunked. This was the same whole where we both pulled out about 10 the week before. I decided to head downstream a little bit while EE napped on a rock and got into two more nice ones (both escaped the camera). I went back upstream to the money hole and saw that EE awakened from his slumber. We both fished the hole again and could not bring a fish to hand. This was looking bad as EE was yet to bring a fish to hand after 5 hours of fishing. I brought in 6 at this point, but should have had 30 at this point. I headed downstream a bit and got into the biggest of the day (he wouldn't sit still for the pic):

I moved down about 50 feet and brough two more two hand. Another 20 feet and brought in another. The Elk Hair seemed to be on now! EE headed down to me and I sickened him with my recent picture; he was still toting the skunk around. He proclaimed "If I only had a yellow fly!". I had some Yellow Stimulators on my vest that were not succesful in catching that day, but they were succesful in hooking into about 20. Wanting nothing to do with anything but Elh Hairs, I willingly gave up this cursed fly (of which was only cursed for me). EE decided to proclaim vengance on a particular hole that he was bound in determined to get a fish out of. I told him I would fish up to that hole and wished him luck or whatever would bring fish to his hand. I ended up bringing 3 more before calling it a day and headed up to EE. He finally caught fish!. It took about 8 hours, but that dumb unlucky fly of mine brought some fish in. Seeing this, I had to make one more cast (it turned into 50 more casts). We stayed until dark-thirty and I was cursed in this hole. I think that yellow stimulator had something to do with convincing the fish in the hole to hit my Elk Hair with their tails as I could not land a fish. Oh well, 13 brookies to hand isn't too awful of a day. The ride out turned out to be a nightmare as all that rain had dumped in and the fog was ridiculous. We made it safely out and found a late night snack of greasy burgers before heading back to Georgia.

Sounds like an adventurous day - glad you scored.

Gonna be interesting to hear EE's side of this tale....

It started off bad for him, but he came back late in the fourth quarter. It was a frustrating day, I just happened to have a few stay on the hook.

Sounds like the fish in the money hole have got more cents now.

I think I was passed the skunk before leaving. I should have quit when I was ahead, but when I saw EE getting into actively rising fish, I couldn't resist.
