Thompson whip finisher

I received some jig tying tools for Christmas: a vise with 3 exchangeable heads that can take up 5/0 hooks (down to 26), bobbin, and whip finisher along with some marabou feathers. The whip finisher I got is, I believe Thompson, not the kind you see frequently on YouTube. It seems hand tying the finishing not is much easier (well, I need more practice with this device).

Until I get more materials, I'll be playing with marabou. It's very addictive, and I see my hard-earned money leaving from my wallet in the near future.

Sorry, this is a fly tying thread, but here are a couple I tied on 1/32 jigs. I hope I can catch some fish with these.

Those dogs will hunt. I predict success whether you are going after trout or warm water species. Very nice

Sounds like you have what's called an "orbital whip finisher." I've never tried one, but advice is to get a Renzetti type. Learn to tie a whip with your fingers, but sometimes (many times) a tool is helpful.

Best whip is by Frank Mattarelli. He makes them ,and his bobbins ,by hand---if he is still living. He was in his 80's. Franks whips run around $18. There are plenty of knock-offs of his whip for a third of that. These are mostly what you see in the videos. His genuine whips have F and M stamped on the flat at the bottom of the swivel shaft. Certain to be collectibles someday.

You can use the Thompson and it does work but do yourself a favor and buy a Matareli style whip finisher. It's a night and day difference. You do need to learn how to do a whip finsih by hand. Nice looking ties. keep it up.

Are there circumstances where the whip finishing tool is inadequate?

I've tried finishing by hand just because I've seen them do it on the YouTube videos. But I've always fumbled it and returned to the tool with good results.

The Thompson whip finisher works well when used right at the hook eye. It can't be used effectively to tie off behind a bead. I agree with the other posters - get a Matarelli-style whip finisher which can do it all.
