What wt bamboo would you make?

need your recomendations. i just signed up to make a rod with Bill Oyster. what wt and length do recommend i make for fishing the rivers and streams of n. ga. I currently use a 5wt sage z-axis and have never used a bamboo rod.

First bamboo? I would stay in the 7-7 1/2 ft 5wt. Plenty of good tapers to choose from in that configuration.

If you already have a 5wt go with something smaller for blue lining.
But I don't really know anything about rod building.

I took Bill's class back in 2008; you are going to have a great tmie! I built a 7'-9" 4 weight. Great trout rod that is not too short and not too long. Bill has two tapers for this length, one with a slower traditional bamboo action and one with a bit quicker action (Bill claims it is a top secret taper

). I chose the quicker action 4 weight and love the rod! I toss just about anything with that rod, from drys to weighted flies with extra split shot!

I agree with fishnpreacher, 7-7.5' - 5wt. That's a pretty standard size that will be a fine small stream rod and still have enough oomph (I believe that's the correct technical term) to toss some bigger bugs when needed.

Also, because of it's popular size, it should be easier to unload when you get the bamboo foolishness out of your system.

I have a quicker action 7'6 4 weight and I love it. I have pulled in fish 5lbs on it and lost even bigger ones.
