Default My Sons First Trout on a Dry--Toccoa Tailwater

Took my three boys out to Horseshoe Bend Park near McCaysville this evening for a little fishing with Dad. The younger boys stuck with the spinning gear rigged with bobbers, bb shot and pheasant tails. My oldest, Jack, 13, says "I'm gonna fly-fish tonight. I wanna try one of those dry-flies you talk about."

Needless to say I was happy to oblige. He started with a Para. Adams (sz. 16) and in about 3 casts he'd made a late attempt to hook a fish. After a little coaching, he stuck his first fish on a dry fly. His eyes lit up. I was one proud Papa. Only a bonus there were a bunch of folks hangin around the park for the weekly "Pickin' in the Park" (music in background) who also got to see him.

Jack has always just kinda "liked" fishing and has been my hunter. However, when that fish nailed a dry and he buttoned up with it, I'd wager that now he's "hooked!"

Hopefully the first of many. Looks like you hooked another one besides the trout!

I hope you followed protocol - after a child's first trout on a dry, they get to pick supper!

Congtats to Jack.

Good going Jack, just keep the memory of your first one alive forever, and you will always be able to tell your kids and grandkids about your first one just after they have caught their first.
