And on that note, let's give this one a rest. If someone wants to reopen this thread, click on the little triangle in the lower left corner and ask that the thread be reopened. Or send me a PM (which right now might arrive next Tuesday...).

Thanks for the great video I have never attended a competition so I thought everyone would be stressed, but that did not appear to be the case..

I cannot understand kayakers having issues with fisherman in the water unless the rub is really water right of ways.. Is that what's going on.

Default Thanks Trout8myfly

Guys lets keep it clean and civil or it will get shut down...again.

Good point FishGazer. Differeing user groups could have issues with different opinions of right of ways. It could relate more to the big picture. In the video I do not think that is the case, but that is my opinion.

Thank you again, fisher, for your post. Now let's go fishin' on Saturday.
The lower nantahala is a river that can really test your skills. The fish can be finicky, very light tippets are needed, and it offers two unique situations: low water and high water. It takes a great angler to really get them figured out enough to win a competition. The number of boats going down the river can create some bad situations, but every angler has to deal with them. It just makes the fish little harder to get, although the fish arent bugged by them. As far as the few kayakers who think they own the river and find it neccesary to try to ruin somebody's fishing experience, they just need to know that karma's a b****.

Ps, I'm glad everything has been cleared up for those that were confused. I was worried this was just going to become another comp angler bashing thread.

The thread for me was never a comp bashing thing and I hope none of the comp guys took it that way. For me it is more about potential conflict on public lands which I find a very interesting topic. For full disclosure I've followed the decisions on the Tooga for many years, and as someone who used to really enjoy kayaking, but who now is much more likely to carry a small rod and a topo, I try and look at these sorts of things from both sides. I do think that if opportunities vs. threats are assessed by those involved in comp fishing, user conflict at public venues would be pretty high on the list of potential threats to continued growth of the sport.

Just ran back across this, and after having seen a groups of kayakers literally push a fisherman out of an area.(This took place on the nanty- same river as the video) (by block all the water he had been fishing). It makes me more appreciative of the boaters that still have manners. Some of the nicest where some competition boaters out on the river. (I actually found it rather cool to watch them). To all the nice boaters out there, Thanks it is appreciated much more then you know.

X2

I fished this comp as well and it was CROWDED on the river. They had canoe and kayak races going on all day as well as many other spectators floating with them and the normal rafters. I was suprised how little conflict there was though. I had only one group of kayakers that sorta irritated me. I had about 10 of them stop about 5 feet in front of me in the eddy i was fishing. My controller politely asked if they could move along and they did. I ended up fishing the same beat as the angler in the video. Lots of boats tend to stop there, so it was tough at times. I still managed to score 3 out of it though. Definately was a tough/fun comp!

yes it was definitely a tough comp. I am glad though for having a bunch of nice boaters. (there where a few that weren't the nicest but they keep going on there way) The kayak\canoe competition was actually pretty cool to see. (Especially the gear, I used to canoe and kayak some but can't anymore because of a lack of equipment)
