My family and I have developed an understanding. If they are not up on the weekend by the time I get a cup or two of coffee in me and we don't have other plans, I think that they want me to go fishing. It happened today so I scooted up to the dam.
On my way in, I ran into my favorite bad luck charm and bonedog. Despite seeing said favorite bad luck charm not once but twice, I managed a good day's fishing and stayed dry! Fishing started of well. I tied on a WB and let it swing below me while I tied up the rest of my flies. I caught a snit before I could even get the rest of my rig set. I finally got set and went to work. I fished from the big hole all the way down to the top of Bowman's. The fish were where you'd expect them to be and pretty much any hole that I spent any time working produced. Had I better tippet, I would have had close to 20 to hand. At it was I touched a dozen and waved a several more. They were steady all day and took a variety of wet and dry flies. Most were snits, some were in the 12 inch range. No browns this trip, nor the last trip either. I've ether lost the ability to tempt them with my flies, or the summer fishing and heavy population of bows has them in limited numbers. Either way it was a great day on the water. I tried out my Skinny Nelsons that I tied up yesterday and the fish really liked them. The only 'bad' luck I had on the day was that I kept breaking fish off. I only had 7X tippet left because I ran out of 5X. I checked the date and the 7X was way over the limit. Time for a trip to the fly shop for some more. To my NGTO friends, I hope you had a good float today. DD F ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I got around 15. All bows except for one jumping brown. I guess he wanted to act like a bow.
#16 pheasant tail all day fished 5' below a Foam hopper

I don't know what happened to all the browns. I don't think I've laid hands on one in a couple weeks. The last time I caught one was the trip when I fell in and soaked myself. I had several that day. As long as I'm catching fish, I guess it is all good. It was good to see you guys, even if it was just for a wave by. DD F

Glad to see you brought a few 'bows to hand. An' don't gripe 'bout not gittin' enny browns of late. Remember, I got a brown lastest week on a buffalo dropper that YOU tied! I think that you git to claim that one ever' bit as much as I do! (Missed ya on the river with us today, brah!) -SA

Bigorangefan (James) and I were out above Bowman's this past Wed and were able to coax a few browns onto our lines, but we had to use some really small stuff. I was able to pick up a few on #20 Bowman's Gnat, black Stimi and black zebra. James pulled in a nice 13" brown on what he thought was a #32 dark emerger. When I tried anything larger like an #14 Olive Weenie or Olive WB I picked up stocked rainbows. However, I still agree that the browns have been less active then in past years. Glad you were able to make it out and enjoy the great weather out there today.

Good to see you yesterday, DDF. I got a dozen and missed quite a few, only got one brown. I did have a nice brown hit a black zebra midge but, alas, missed him as well. I did quite a bit of experimenting and used a dry/dropper the whole time, probably should have gone deeper with tried and true methods to up the catch rate. It was a nice day on the reever never-the-less.

Call me weird but I prefer to coax those guys to hit on the surface. I've found my self leaving the nymphing gear alone and rigging up the dry fly presentation equipment and targeting the browns with something very small, black and boyant.
I get lots of takes everytime I go. Here is the brown that Sam referred to. It took me 20 minutes to entice a bite. I think I had a half dozen rejections until I tied on something truly tiny. ![]()
