Default NGTO Campout on the POOT!

Had a great weekend of comradery, story telling, fishing, and general BS. Several of us had our own adventures as well. Started off the day right with setting up camp and gearing up to fish, most of the guys had camped the night before as well. While gearing up, a fellow NGTO'er had a flat tire that the crew exchanged. We went upstream and began to fish, lost count of how many fish we caught. Atomic PT's, Stimis, Beetles, Green Weenies, and Trout Brains were the flies of the day. Easily upper double digit day, with SEVERAL nice fish to hand. Get back to camp for some grub, and one of the members of Team Dead Drift was fishing, when a Jeep rolled off the mountain side and he rescued the family including 2 small children!

After the grub was cooking for a while, we caught a wiff of something horrible! We began to search to make sure there wasnt something dead nearby. Nope!

We had 3, 16 inch trout on thre grill that he ran off with sadly...

The visotor made his way off into the unknown and as he dissapeared into the forrest he looked back and appeared to chuckle for defiling our campsite...

Overall their were, Tubers (yes tubers) on the creek, lots of anglers, lots of campers and hikers, and the creek saw a lot of use. The fishing was still excellent imo, and we all caught some large wild fish. Anyone that thinks the poot is a fishless waste land is mistaken. It takes a lot of work for some small fish, but it is rewarding.

It must have been hot as crap wearing that costume for a couple pics!

What costume? That's the real deal. As far as temps were concerned, it was downright cold Saturday Morning. I think the high temp in the forest was about 80 degrees. Really nice up there. Great time by the fire with the best of friends. Laughed so hard telling stories I have a raspy voice today. Fishing was great. It's been years since I've fished there and finally I shook off the skunk. I really was shocked that there were tubers and saw quite a few signs of bait fishing (worm containers, bobbers in trees, and powerbait containers). Still a beautiful stream, but needing more enforcement (but so does everywhere else and I'm NOT DNR bashing)

And There seriously was a car flipped over off the side of mountain and chase, a DD member, jumped on the car and pulled a whole family out. He did all of this while keeping his beard in perfect condition

This guy didn't help at all:

Garrett also caught his first wild-native fish. another accomplishment worth mentioning.

That was an awesome weekend. We all caught loads of fish an I did manage my first natives. The first creek I fished is generally well known and I only got 6. I managed to find another small stream by accident and found TONS above some big falls. It was a good time!

It was a fun time this weekend. I did a little more cooking and relaxing than I did fishing, but that was my plan to begin with. I bought a new toy for this trip. I decided to buy a dutch oven and try my hand at being camp cook. Here are some pics I got...

FOOD:

Dutch Kielbasa

Ingredients: 2 lb Kielbasa or smoked sausage (I subbed Cajun Sausage)
2 onions
3 bell peppers
1 medium can pineapple chunks
2 Tbsp cooking oil
Instructions: Place dutch oven on top of a solid bed of coals.
Cut sausage in 1-inch chunks.
Cut onions and peppers into 3/4-inch strips.
Pour oil into dutch oven.
Saute onions and peppers until onions are clear.
Add sausage to saute.
Pour in pineapple, including juice.
Create a single ring of coals and place dutch oven on that.
Put lid on dutch oven and cover top with coals.
Cook for 35 min at 350 degrees.

Breakfast Cornbread:

dutch oven
Ingredients: 1/4 C sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp nutmeg
powdered milk for 4 cups
1/2 C cornmeal
1/2 C raisins
2 Tbs oil
2 eggs
1/2 cup pancake syrup
Instructions: In a zip-loc bag, combine sugar, cinnamon, ginger, salt, and nutmeg.
Warm 4 cups water in a pot. Pour in powdered milk and heat to steaming.
Pour in cornmeal and reduce heat to simmering.
Stir until thick, about 10 minutes or so.
Remove from heat.
Beat eggs and oil in a cup and stir into cornmeal.
Stir in sugar mixture, raisins, and syrup.
Pour into well-oiled dutch oven.
Cook for about 40 minutes at about 350 degrees - coals covering the lid and about half that many under the oven.
If a toothpick stuck in the center comes out clean, it's ready.

Creamy Chicken and Rice:

Ingredients: 1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can cream of celery soup
1 can cream of chicken soup
2 cups white rice
1 cup water
1 cut up chicken or 4 breasts
1/2 pkg dry onion soup mix
Instructions: Pour water, 3 soups, and rice into dutch oven.
Arrange chicken pieces on top of rice.
Sprinkle onion soup mix on top.
Bake for 1 hour at about 350.

Check at about 30 minutes - add more water if it seems to need it.

And then some pics from around camp:

After putting up with all of us for a day, Melissa decided it was time to crack open her bottle of Sangria:

Heck of a weekend. I had a lot of fun. Ate well. And relaxed by a stream in the mountains with good company. I don't think I could have asked for anything better!
